Frequently Asked Questions

  • Cutting mangroves without a permit or valid authorization can be costly. Fines begin at $7500 for both the property owner and the vegetation contractor. If the mangroves are altered beyond corrective pruning such as being cut down to sticks with no remaining foliage, or cut below 6’ in height, there may be an issue of non-compliance. Once the fines are issued, mangrove mitigation is required in the form of a payment to a mitigation bank or replanting of mangroves onsite. Mighty Mangroves is here for you if you have a mangrove accident. We can provide a mangrove assessment, speak to the FDEP or agencies on your behalf and work out a solution to reach a more favorable outcome.

  • A warning letter is typically issued when non-compliance with either a permit or the environmental laws is noted and documented. As a recipient, you need to respond to the FDEP reviewer in a timely manner. Not responding may result in further enforcement action with legal consequences. Fines, mitigation or restoration of the property shoreline is often required as part of resolution.

  • Mangroves that are less than 10’, as measured from the substrate, can be reduced in height in stages to a minimum height of 6’, as measured from the substrate. A Professional Mangrove Trimmer must be hired to supervise and/or conduct the trimming if the mangroves are greater than 10’ in height. Specific care should be taken to hire a professional that is familiar with mangroves and other non-mangrove species along the shoreline. Exotic vegetation such as Brazilian pepper should be removed as part of mangrove trimming maintenance. It’s hard work, so it’s a great idea to call us for a nice trimming job that will be in compliance.

  • A PMT is a licensed qualified individual who has met the credential listed in the 1996 Mangrove Trimming & Preservation Act. ISA Certified Arborists, Professional Wetland Scientists, Landscape Architects, and other certifications are acceptable. We have 25 years of experience with mangroves and mangrove trimming, permitting, restoration planting and education.

  • Mangroves grow in the subtropical and tropical regions of the world in specific latitudes of warm climates. In Florida, there are 3 native species of mangroves: Red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle), Black mangroves (Avicennia germinans), and White mangroves (Laguncularia racemosa).

  • There is privacy to be maintained by leaving the mangroves in a natural condition. Exotics should be removed so that the mangroves can thrive and function in their ideal state. If you’d like to have a mangrove consultation and shoreline assessment, please request a consultation. We can offer advice and solutions to meet your needs for viewing, vessel access and dock access. We can obtain permits for trimming if needed.

  • We have an in-house mangrove nursery and install our mangroves. Our mangrove restoration plantings are conducted with ecologically sound practices to achieve the desired outcome for your project. We get it right for you. We contract grow for large projects and typically have mangroves in stock.
